Fort Collins USGP Day 1

The weather was miserable. 39deg and light drizzle up to the start, then it started raining pretty good. The course was dry for 1 lap, but turned turned to slick mud.

14 juniors started 1 minute behind the large masters 45+ field. Keegan Swenson, whole athlete/Specialized, took the hole shot, and they rolled up on the back of the masters field less than half a lap in. Jordan Cullen, Clif Bar Devo, was delayed in the starting stretch when Michael Dessau, ACR, chopped him into the barriers. Early in the race, it was Keegan in the lead, with Logan Owen, Redline, and Zane Godby, Clif Bar Devo, 5 seconds back, and Jordan another 10secs back, Spencer Downing, Clif Bar Devo, was just behind Jordan.

Owen and Godby joined Keegan by the end of the 1st lap as they battled through the masters field. Jordan was struggling a bit with skipping gears. With 3 of 5 laps complete, the front 3 had passed the entire masters field, and Logan went on the attack.

Owen's attack left Godby and Keegan chasing together, as Jordan switched to his backup bike. Cypress Gorry and Skyler Taylor both passed Downing on the 4th lap. On the final lap, Owen pushed home to take the win, as Godby dropped a tiring Keegan. After another bike change, Jordan mounted a couragous last lap comeback, but couldn't reach the tiring Keegan. Gorry finished 5th, and Downing outsprinted Skyler for 6th.

Jordan was recently invited to attend the USA Cycling National Talent ID Camp in Chula Vista, CA held Oct 30-Nov 3. This is the 3rd successive year Jordan has been invited to this exclusive camp, designed to develop the future US professional road cyclists. Costs of the camp are limited to airfare, and bike transport. USA Cycling picks up all lodging, food, and other transport fees.

Unfortunately, Jordan made a difficult choice last spring, in making cyclocross his priority this year. Between the risk of burn-out, high costs involved, and missing too much school, he was forced to choose. While Jordan did have a phenomenal road season this year, he did pass on the opportunity to road race in Europe with USA Cycling this summer, and is opting out of attending the National Talent ID Camp this fall.

Jordan did get the opportunity to attend an invite only Cyclocross Camp in Helena, MT in July. USA Cycling provide the same level of support there as they do for the Talent ID Camp.

Good to see USA Cycling providing these opportunities for promising young cyclists.

Jordan is planning on attending Euro Cross Camp in Belgium, in December over the holidays. He is also making a bid for the USA Junior 17-18 World Cyclocross Team. We are raising funds to help cover some of the costs of Jordan's travel.

Jordan's European Cross Campaign

Many people have been wondering why Jordan has missed the last couple Tuesday Night Cross races, and why he isn't racing the USGP at Madison next weekend. He has been advised by his coaches to take a break from racing in September, in preparation for a long cross season. With Nationals moving to January, and the ultimate goal of making the US Cyclocross Worlds team, he needs the rest.

Jordan will be racing again this year for Clif Bar Development Cross Team out of Boulder, CO. The team is managed by Ben Turner and Mitch Hoke.

Since your cyclocross age is one year older than your actual age, Jordan is now 17, and is in his first year of eligibility to race Cyclocross Worlds.

The selection criteria for the worlds team requires travel to major events, in both the US and Europe, which are UCI sanctioned. At these events, high placings earn UCI points, which determine your national and world ranking. These UCI rankings are used by USA Cycling coaches to select riders for the European World Cups and Cross Worlds Team.

Jordan wins Chequamegon Short and Fat

Jordan won the Chequamegon Short and Fat race, held in Cable, WI yesterday. He did so in dominating fashion, attacking the 900 racer field just a mile or so into the race as the surface changed from pavement to gravel. Only Ian Haupt attempted to follow, but was soon reeled in by a front group of chasers. Jordan finished nearly 4 minutes clear, in the 2nd fastest time in the 29 year history of the event. Ian Haupt 2nd, Nate Labecki 3rd. Conditions were dry and fast, as indicated by Jordan's winning time of 48:41, averaging 19.7mph over the 16 mile off-road course.

The Chequamegon has a rich history. With that legacy in mind, Jordan decided last fall he would set a goal of winning the Short and Fat. There are 2 races held at the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival. The Chequamegon 40 is a 40 mile race starting in Hayward, WI finishing at Telemark Lodge in Cable, WI. The Short and Fat is a 16 mile race starting in downtown Cable, and finishing at the same location as the 40. You must be 18 years old on race day to do the 40. The Short and Fat is typically dominated by teenagers, yearning to be old enough to race the 40 someday.

The first step in Jordan's quest to win the Short and Fat was to get a Mountain Bike. We picked up a Scott 26" hardtail in December, 2010 from Flanders Cycles. Jordan's first prep race was the Freewheel Frolic back in May, where he won the Comp division on an extremely muddy course. He raced off-road twice in August. First was the Border Battle in River Falls, WI, where he found the tight twisty single track unlikeable, finishing 4th in the Elite Juniors. Next was the Pre-Fat in Seeley, WI where Jordan won his age class, and finished 16th overall in the Expert division.

Then MBRC/Flanders teammate, Ed Macholda, generously offered to loan Jordan his Trek Top Fuel 9.9 for the Short and Fat. Jordan quickly leaped at the opportunity, and the rode the full suspension machine in a flawless race to victory.

Jordan was disappointed he had to miss Hudson High's Homecoming, but we all know being a great athlete requires sacrifice.

Chris Ferris (PJW racing) and Linsey Hamilton (Synergy) both retained their MN State Match Sprint Championships. Both riders proved to be unbeatable, each having the fastest flying 200m for their field, and neither of them losing a race all night.

The men's semi-final match-ups were defending champ Ferris vs. 16 year-old Jordan Cullen (MBRC/Flanders), and a heavyweight bout between Mike Hall (Behind Bars/LGR) vs. Ted Schmid (SpeedFix). Ferris and Cullen showed off their trackstand ability, having to be whistled off after a 30sec standoff. Ferris was forced to use the afterburners against Cullen's junior gear restricted, fast spinning legs, prevailing in 2 races, and taking the match. Schmid and Hall were the match-up of the night. Both savvy veterans of the event, they pushed each other hard, splitting the first 2 races, forcing a 3rd. In 3rd race, Hall opened up the sprint first, with Schmid getting to his wheel, but not having enough to come around. Hall moved on to the Gold Medal round against Ferris, with Cullen and Schmid racing for Bronze.

In the Bronze medal match, Cullen took advantage of the fact that Schmid was tired from a hard fought battle with Hall, going hard right from the start. Schmid got onto young Cullen's wheel, but Cullen persisted with a insane pace, even accelerating at the bell to drop Schmid. More of the same in the 2nd race, with Cullen taking the match.

In the Gold Medal match, Ferris had the upper hand against a battle weary Hall, but there were to be no gifts this night. The first race was a close one, with Ferris jumping Hall from behind. Hall did his best to hold the sprinters lane, but the Ferris afterburners were too much. First race to Ferris. In the 2nd race, Hall tried jumping first, and pulled away briefly, only to have Ferris come over in the backstretch for an easy victory.

The women did a round robin format to determine the final match-ups. The Gold Medal round was between defending champ Linsey Hamilton and 16 year-old Sarah Huang (ISCorp). The Bronze Medal round was between Teresa Moriarty (MBRC/Flanders) and Megan Kelly (Omnium). Kelly rode impressively against heavily favored Moriarty, but Teresa prevailed, winning the match in 2 races. The Gold Medal round was a good one. In race 1, a tactically savvy Hamilton kept young Huang on her right hip, preventing her from taking the sprinters lane, taking the easy win. Race 2 was much closer, with Huang following in Hamilton's slip stream. Huang attempted to come around in the final turn, but Hamilton was able to hold on to win race 2, and retain her state championship title for another year.

Mike Pribble was the winner of the Men's Cat 4/5 title.

Jordan had a blast at Geoff Proctor's 1st ever Cyclocross Camp this past week in Helena, MT. Great input from the Camp on his preparation for this Cross season. He did crash hard, but he's OK.

Excerpt from the Helena Independent Record Newspaper:

Jordan Cullen, a 16-year-old from Hudson, Wisc., was nursing some injuries suffered in a crash Wednesday and sat out Thursday’s Cox Lake training session, but the scrapes and bruises didn’t seem to curb his enthusiasm.

Cullen (sixth place) was one eight Helena campers who placed among the top 20 at last year’s cyclocross 15-16 national championships — the others being Spence Peterson (third, Mill Valley, Calif.), Curtis White (fifth, Delanson, N.Y.), Ian Haupt (seventh, Whitefish Bay, Wisc.), Stephen Bassett (ninth, Knoxville, Tenn.), Spencer Downing (10th, Boulder, Colo.), Beckner (17th) and Lionel Rocheleau (18th, Waukesha, Wisc.).

“It’s pretty awesome,” said Cullen, who rides for Minneapolis Bicycle Racing Club-Flanders. “This whole week was super fun. I learned some new skills and the riding here is awesome. This is an awesome group of guys and we really all got along.”

Jordan will be home from Rimouski less than a week, before he boards a plane bound for Helena, MT for an exclusive USA Cycling Cyclocross Camp. Below is an excerpt from USA Cycling about the camp:

From July 25-28 at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., Geoff Proctor will hold a Cyclo-cross development camp for selected riders. The camp is designed to work on skills, technique, training and set short-term as well as long-range goals.

Proctor is a top-level coach and a member of the Union Cycliste Internationale Cyclo-cross commission who served as coach for U23 and Junior World Championship teams from 2002-11.

"This camp is designed to provide transitional training and mental refreshment in a non-competitive, but focused environment," Proctor said. "We will start the day with early morning conditioning, then move to morning cyclo-cross skill development, and follow up with afternoon training group rides. We will be doing some beautiful rides in and around the Continental Divide in addition to our drills on a scenic cyclo-cross circuit in the foothills above Helena.

"At this summer camp, we will not be doing formal testing or racing. Other than the friendly contests that come out of our training together, our emphasis will be on the big picture."

Americans Dominate Final Stage of Tour of Rimouski

The American teams of Borah Development and Chipotle Development put their final stamp of authority on the Tour of Rimouski in the tough 6th and final stage.

Borah development kept their 2nd place on Team GC. Evan Hartig slipped just 1 spot to 4th on individual GC, and Jordan Cullen handily won the Polka Dot climber's jersey. It was really great to hear how this composite team of 16 year olds, from all across the midwest, came together, and formed a cohesive unit on and off the bike.

Chipotle went a perfect 6 for 6 in stage wins, and went 1st and 3rd on Team GC. Danny Parks won the Yellow Jersey for individual overall GC, and Jonathon Schilling won the Green sprinter's jersey. Below is an recap of the final stage from Canadian Cycling Magazine:

"The cadet boys race was dominated in many ways by the Polka Dot Jersey holder Jordan Cullen, who took three of the five Mountain Points sprints. A strong headwind off the top of the climb made it impossible for any of the breakaways off the top to stick, though, so the race quickly became one of a battle of attrition. Heading into the final lap there was a group of eight that had got clear, but the Borah Development and Chipotle teams quickly went to the front to slow things down so that the chase group of seven could join in.

That left a group of 15 to duke things out over the final lap. As has been the norm this week, Chipotle dominated the sprint. Today it was Michael Dessau’s turn to win a stage. His teammates wearing the Yellow and Green Jersey’s finished in the group at the front, which meant that Jonathan Schilling (who finished third) took the points title while Daniel Parks kept the Yellow Jersey."

The American cadet (15-16 boys) teams of Borah Development and Chipotle Development have put the 20 Canadian teams on notice at the Tour of Rimouski. These American riders have won every stage, hold the Leader's Yellow Jersey, Sprinter's Green Jersey, and Climber's Polka Dot Jersey, and sit 1st and 2nd on team general classification.

Today was another great day for Borah Development 15-16 boys. Jordan finished 2nd in the stage 4 time-trial, 16 seconds behind the stage winner. Evan Hartig finished 7th, Rudy Peterson 11th, and Trevor Rolette 47th.

In the stage 5 criterium, all 4 of the Borah Development riders finished in the same time as the winner, with Rudy 6th, Trevor 7th, Evan 16th, and Jordan 24th.

After stage 5, Evan sits 3rd on GC, Jordan 6th, Rudy 12th, and Trevor 37th. They are 2nd on the Team GC. Jordan continues to lead the climbers competition for the Polka Dot Jersey.

The Chipotle Development Team continues their domination. In fact, they have won each of the 5 stages, and lead both the individual and team GC. The also have a lead in the sprint competion for the Green Jersey.

As strong as the Chipotle team is, word from the Borah Development enclave is that Evan, Jordan, Rudy, and Trevor have become a very tight group, and are willing to give it up for each other. This is sure to be a big factor in the tough final stage.

Tomorrow's final stage 6, features 5 laps on a 7 mile circuit with a brutal mile long steep climb each lap. It will be an opportunity for both American teams to showcase their talent, and beat the canadians on their home turf.

Jordan has ridden his way into the Polka Dot Jersey signifying the best climber at the 2011 Tour of Rimouski held in Quebec, Canada. There are sprints at the top of the climbs during each stage, where riders earn points towards the climbing competition. The leader of the competition wears the Polka Dot jersey during the race.

The Tour of Rimouski is a stage race, exclusively for Cadets (juniors age 15-16). It started last year, and is already drawing the best junior racers in North America. Jordan is racing on a composite team put together by USA Cycling Regional Coordinator, Larry Martin, riding for Team Borah Junior Development. It includes Rudyard Peterson from Michigan, Trevor Rolette from Illinois, and Evan Hartig from Iowa.

Jordan got 2nd in the climber's sprint on the first of two climbs of stage 1, held Thursday. Stage 2 was a Team Time Trial on Thursday afternoon, where no climbers points were awarded. It was in stage 3 where Jordan won maximum points at the top of the 1st climb to earn the Polka Dot leaders jersey, which he will wear in tomorrow's stage 4.

Jordan's Team Borah finished 4th out of 23 teams in the Team Time Trial (stage 2), 16 seconds behind the winning team. After Friday's stage 3, Team Borah sits in 3rd place, 1:17 down on the leading team.

Teammate Evan Hartig made the winning break in Stage 3, finishing 2nd, moving him into 3rd place overall, 10 seconds down on the leader. Rudy sits in 8th overall - 1:05 down, Trevor sits 25th overall - 1:07 down, and Jordan is 33 overall - 1:07 down.

Team Borah Development definitely have their hands full with Chipotle Junior Development. There are 8 riders for that team, including all 3 national champions (Time Trial, Criterium, and Road Race) from US Junior Nationals this year.

Stages 4 and 5 are held Saturday. Stage 4 is a 6K individual Time Trial. Stage 5 is a Criterium. No mountain points are available for either stage, so Jordan will keep his Polka Dot jersey, and wear it for Sunday's final stage 6. Stage 6 is the toughest stage of the race, with 5 laps on a 11.5k circuit, featuring a climbers sprint each lap at the top of Cathedrale Hill (5-10% grade for 1.5k).

Overnight and morning rains turned to hot and sunny skies for the 2011 Hopkins Raspberry Criterium. Tim Mulrooney of Synergy Racing won the Men Cat 1/2/3 race, from a 3-man breakaway which led most of the race. Breakaway companion Nick Kimpton of MBRC/Flanders was 2nd, with Micah Moran of GrandStay Hotels 3rd.

The 3-man break formed before the midpoint of the race, and with 3 of the strongest teams represented, there were few left to chase, as the gap drifted between 15-30 seconds for most of the race. Mulrooney, Kimpton, and Moran were sharing the work equally as a few riders tried unsuccessfully to bridge the gap solo. With a few laps left, Michael Woell of MBRC/Flanders made his bid for the leading trio. He closed the gap to 5 seconds, but the bell lap came too soon, and he was left to ride in solo for 4th place, as Timmer easily won the sprint. Brandon Krawczyk of GrandStay Hotels won the field sprint for 5th, followed by Derek Goerke of Bianchi/Grand Performance.

The Women's Open race was dominated by MBRC/Flanders racer Teresa Moriarty, who chased down a late race solo move, then attacked the field with a few laps left. Only Bianchi/Grand Performance's Zoe Reker was able to follow Teresa, with the two of them sharing the work for the final few laps. Teresa out sprinted Zoe for the win, with Zoe taking 2nd. The field sprint was won by Patricia Black.

The Masters 35+ race was beset by a 1st lap crash. A minivan went around a barrier blocking a parking lot exit, pulling right in front of the field as the riders exited the final turn to the finish line. Several riders piled into the side of the van, with MCT/Freewheel's Kevin Lennon getting the worst of it, crashing hard on the pavement. Everyone was able to restart, except for Kevin, after a short delay. The race came down to a field sprint, with ISCorp's Phillip Godkin taking the victory, followed by Lazlo Alberti, and Chad Wiesgram.

The Men's 3/4 race saw 3 separate solo breakaways, first by Peter Hagerty of Bianchi/Grand Performance, then Ben Schinke of Balance Fitness/Erik's, then Seth Iverson of Omnium Racing. However, each was reeled in, leaving it to a field sprint, with Brady Prenzlow of Balance Fitness/Erik's Bike Shop taking the win. Andy Frye of Wilier BikeThrow Racing was 2nd, and Peter Hagerty 3rd.

We made the 7 hour drive home from Lawrence, KS this morning to make the annual Northfield Crit was well worth it. A great event, not to be missed. Jordan's Grandma, Papa, and Carla met us there to watch.

The Cat 1/2 race was fast and furious, with move after move. Some looked like they would stick, only to be brought back. Jordan and his MBRC/Flanders team were very aggressive.

The winning move came with less than 10 laps to go, when Dylan Knutson attacked on the finishing stretch, and was quickly joined by Pat Lemieux, and Dan Casper. A short time later, Jordan Cullen bridged up. Finally, Flanders teammate Michael Woell bridged the gap making them 5 strong.

The gap to the field was never huge, between 10-15 seconds as the laps ticked by, and Grand Performance led the chase at the front of the field.

On the final lap, Jordan led up the climb, then Woell attacked. Lemieux gave chase, with Jordan on his wheel, followed by Knutson, then Casper. They went into the final turn in that order. Lemieux easily won the slightly downhill, tailwind sprint. Jordan and his 52x14 junior gearing could hold Pat's wheel, but couldn't come around. Dylan Knutson finished 3rd, Woell 4th, Casper 5th. Gregg Brandt won the field sprint for 6th.

Flanders teammates: Adam Gorski was 9th, Toby Henkels 10th, and Merrill Lutsky 11th. Great job MBRC!

Jordan win's a $100 prime with 2 to go in the Pro/1/2 Crit.

Our trip to Lawrence, KS was worth it. Jordan finished 14th out of 72 starters in the tough Pro/1/2 Circuit race on the KU campus. 14 laps on a 4 mile circuit with 400ft of climbing per lap. Jordan said it was the toughest race he's ever done.

Jordan rode well in the Crit too. He won a $50 prime, and then a $100 prime with 2 laps remaining. He actually thought it was $500, which explains the expression on his face in the above photo.

We head home in the morning for the Northfield Crit.

Jordan scored a pair of top 10 finishes in both the 15-16 Junior Boys Criterium and Road Race. 8th in the Criterium, and 10th in the Road Race.

The temperature during the Crit was a muggy 95deg with 80 starters on a rectangular course. The Chipotle Development team was very dominant in the race. In particular, Chipotle's Danny Parks was very aggressive, launching several attacks, including the final winning move, winning solo. Jordan took charge late in the race, chasing down a 2-person break with Parks and Logan Owen. Jordan finished a strong 7th in the field sprint, giving him 8th place.

The temperature during the road race was in the 80's, contested over 3 laps of a 15 mile rolling course. The race stayed together for the first lap, then Jordan and Logan Owen started attacking. There were at least 3 big crashes, one of which took out one of the race favorites Phillip O'Donnell. Jordan was lucky to avoid all of them. Rudy Peterson broke away solo to a 2 minute gap with 1 lap to go. The field caught Rudy, and then another rider, Jake Silverberg, made the winning move with a couple miles to go. He soloed into the finish, a few seconds in front of the field. Jordan finished 9th in the field sprint, giving him 10th place.

I'm so proud of Jordan and all the racers competing here in Augusta. These are a great bunch of kids, and it's great to see the maturity they have, and the respect they give each other, at such a young age. Congrats to everyone!

Jordan Cullen 2nd in the Junior 15-16 Nationals Time Trial

Jordan rode his way to a silver medal today in the 15-16 USA Cycling Nationals Time Trial. His average speed was 28.3mph over the 19Km course. Jonathon Schilling was the winner, 9 seconds faster than Jordan. 3rd place Daniel Parks was less than 2 seconds behind Jordan.

The weather was very unpredictable today. It was 95 degrees as we drove up to the course, when a front moved in, the temp dropped 20deg, and it started pouring. Jordan was last to start in his group, and it was 77deg, dry, and calm. It started raining while he was on course, and the wind picked up too. He considers himself lucky, as he slid on the wet road at the turn around, just saving it.

The last few kids to start (riders start alone, every 30 secs), were seeded such that they were the fastest of the bunch. The only exception was Logan Owen, who sat on the hot seat of race leader, starting 3rd out of over 80 15-16 yr old boys. In fact, it was 5 of the last 6 riders to start that pushed Logan all the way from the hot seat, to his final position of 6th place.

Sizzling in Georgia

We hit the road bound for Augusta, GA for USA Cycling Junior Nationals this past Saturday morning, after a successful Grad Party for Maren Friday night. The original plan was for Adam Bergman and Lisha Herold to go with, but Adam bailed on us, leaving us a party of 3.

Stopped overnight in Nashville, TN. Amazingly, we stopped in Atlanta for a bite to eat, and ran into Mario Macaruso, from MN, who was headed the opposite direction. What are the odds?

Arrived in Augusta at 4PM, and it was 101degF. We rode from our hotel up to the TT course and back with Sarah Huang. Monday, we did recon on the TT course, and today we did recon on the RR and crit courses. It is hot, but not that bad when your riding, just when you stop.

The TT course starts on the South Carolina side of a large Dam and heads west into Georgia on a rolling, tree lined course. The pavement is smooth, and the road will be closed for the TT. Very nice!

The Road Race course is on the Fort Gordon military base. It is a 15 mile scenic loop with rolling climbs. Pavement is pretty good, and I assume the road will be closed on race day. This course definitely gets an "A".

The crit course is downtown, in a typical rectangular clockwise layout. Should be fun to race, and watch.

We do miss the bike friendly town of Bend, OR this year. Even though the courses here are grade "A", the riding around town is very bad. Lots of traffic, stop lights, and no bike lanes. Makes me realize how awesome those roundabouts were in Bend.

Jordan and Lisha race the TT on Thursday, Crit on Friday, and Road Race on Sunday. Good luck to both!

We are staying at the Staybridge Suites. Our room is awesome, with a kitchenette, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and 3 flat screen TV's. We have yet to eat out since we got here.

Countdown to US Jr Nationals

Jordan continues to be on a hot streak. His dominance in the Cat 3's at the NSC Velodrome prompted Bob Williams to upgrade him to a Cat 2. Last Thursday Night Lights was his first Cat 1/2 track omnium, where he placed 2nd in the miss-and-out, 5th in the point-a-lap, and 1st in the 10mi Scratch race. In fact, he lapped the entire field solo in the scratch race. Way to go Jordan!

This past weekend was low key, with no racing on the schedule.

Last night was the 2nd State Fair Crit. It was pouring during the Cat 1/2/3 race, so turnout was light. 33 crazy racers started the race, and Flanders had strong representation. Jordan attacked with 5 of 30 laps complete, and got away solo for the remainder of the race. He was out of sight most of the race, but the field closed in during the final laps. Jordan rolled across the line in victory just feet in front of the hard charging field, led by Will Mayavski, and Tim Mulrooney. Flanders did an excellent job of covering the front of the field during Jordan's break. Jordan is rewarding his teammates with the 4 Rock Bottom Brewery Growlers from all the ninja primes he won.

Tonight is Farm Dog TT #2, then we head to Augusta, GA on Saturday with Adam Bergman and Lisha Herold. All 3 of them are racing at nationals, with me there for support. Their first event in the Time-trial which is on Thursday, 6/24.

I do want to give a shout out to the local cycling community for all their support for Jordan. He is inspired by all of you, and we really appreciate all your positive feedback.

Jordan Cullen is WI State Road Race Cat 1/2 Champion at 15!

Jordan's expression says it all

Jordan took, by far, his biggest victory ever Sunday, winning the Cat 1/2 WI State Road Race. He broke away solo on the last of 10 laps to win by several seconds over Tristan Schouten of ISCorp.

Our weekend started with the MN State TT in St. Peter, MN on Saturday. Jordan rode his fastest ever 20K in a time of 26:16, averaging 28mph. That alone was worth celebrating!

After the drubbing the MN Cat 1/2's took at the Durand Road Race earlier this year, Jordan was ready to be "ISCorp'ed" in the Cat 1/2 WI State RR. He was up to the challenge. The course is a 10 laps on a 6.5mi hilly loop, with 400ft of climbing per lap.

ISCorp was 6 strong, with Great Dane Velo, KS Energy/Team WI, and Wheel & Sprocket fielding strong teams as well. Jordan was flying solo, and with junior gears to boot. Right from the gun, the 2010 WI State RR champ, Kip Spaude goes in a 3 man break with Dan Ajer of GDVC, and a KS Energy/Team WI rider. This is the same thing that happened last year, and it was the winning move.

Jordan stayed patient, while various chasers kept the break at around 1 minute for much of the race. Lap 7 saw 3 more riders bridge to the break, making them 6 strong. The 9th lap proved to be very decisive, as the break was caught by a small group of chasers at the base of the finish climb, leading into the bell lap.

Tristan attacked the group on the climb, and only Jordan could follow him. The two punched it over the top, and never looked back. The 2 leaders rode hard, and worked together to successfully seal the fate of the chasers.

On the backside, Jordan attacked on the final climb, and opened a gap. He ride his heart out, and stormed to a solo victory. Tristan charged in a few seconds later. The sprint for third followed another few seconds later. Congrats to everyone on a great race!

Melon City and Quad Cities Crit Recap

I finally got back in the saddle for the Masters races at Melon City and Quad Cities Crits over Memorial Day Weekend. A nasty thunderstorm resulted in a 2 hour delay, plus a wet race at the Melon City Crit. My legs were not really there, but I managed an 8th place to win my entry fee back. Dan Casper soloed to an impressive win in that race. Congrats Dan!

The Quad Cities Crit was hot and windy. I went from the gun, taking another rider with me for 6 laps or so. Teammate Woell made the winning break after that, and I tail gunned the rest of the race, with one final attack with 2 to go, which didn't stick. Woell finished 4th.

Jordan race Pro/1/2's both days. He was riding near the front all race at the Melon City Crit, including making a late race breakaway. He was gunning for a top 10 finish, only to have his dreams dashed when a rider in front of him touched wheels on the downhill at 40mph, causing a big pile up which brought Jordan down. Luckily, he landed in the grass, and was not injured, but his bike had enough damage to force him to borrow a bike for Monday.

Pete Davis of ISCorp, was generous enough to load Jordan his bike for the Pro/1/2 race at Quad Cities. Because of his last row start, plus less than stellar legs, by the time he made it to the front of the group, the winning break of 20 riders was gone. He tried to bridge, but didn't make it. He hung in there, and finished 27th, just 2 spots out of the money. Well done Jordan, and a big thanks to Pete Davis!

Memorial Day Weekend brings our 3rd annual pilgrimage to the Quad Cities of Iowa for the Snake Alley Criterium, Melon City Criterium, and Quad Cities Criterium.

Saturday was the famous Snake Alley Criterium. Jordan raced twice. First Juniors, then Pro/1/2. Jordan finished a strong 2nd in the juniors, after a race long battle with a strong Prochain/Turner team.

Jordan really shined in the pro/1/2 race. He rode an amazing race, leading the field up the snake several times, and chasing down breakaways. He finished 14th. Definitely the most impressed I've ever been with his riding. Way to go Jordan!

Tuesday Night Time Trial #2

Cooler temps, moderate winds, and dry roads made for a much more enjoyable TNT Time Trial than 2 weeks ago. These good conditions plus no Opus brought record turnout of 96 racers.

Jordan broke the coveted 24 minute barrier, clocking a PR of 23:55, over 30 seconds faster than last time. His time was just fast enough to beat Timmer, definitely a major milestone for Jordan!

I played rabbit again for Jordan, starting a minute before him. He still caught me, but I was satisfied, clocking a 25:09 for 15th place.

Toftoy continued his domination, clocking a course record 22:16, nearing 30mph ave. Ian Stanford was best of the rest almost a minute back, followed by Casper, Roeser, and Kimpton.

I have to say Twin Cities Spoke IC3 have raised their game this year, and are putting on an incredible Tuesday night event in Medina. Don't miss out on this great opportunity to race the clock and a challenging 11 mile course.

Freewheel Frolic MTB Race - Jordan wins his first MTB race

Jordan's first ever MTB race was a muddy one
Someone needs to be hosed down

Jordan made his debut in Mountain Biking today at the MN Season Opener, the Freewheel Frolic. Soaking rain made for a muddy race, but Jordan prevailed, winning the Comp class overall by 3.5 minutes.

Jordan did 4 laps on the soggy course, spending most of the first lap picking his way to the front of the Comp field, which is staggered in waves, with Jordan starting in the 2nd wave. The muddy conditions wreaked havoc on people drive trains, leaving many to call it a day early.

On the 3rd lap, Jordan over shot a turn, and piled into a barbed wire fence. He cut up his leg, but that didn't stop him. He remounted, and carried on. That's the kind of toughness it takes to be a winner! He finished first in the Comp class, and caught may of the elite field as well, who started a full 7 minutes in front of him.

Halfway through the race, the sun came out, which was not a good thing for the riders. This dried the course, making the mud stickier, and accumulating on the bike. Jordan's bike must have weighed twice it's normal weight by the finish.

The event was a lot of fun, and I was very impressed with the organization. We will be back.

NSC Velodrome Opener - Jordan wins the Cat 3 Omnium

Jordan shined under the Thursday Night Lights for the season track opener at the NSC Velodrome. The Cat 3 competition was tough with 16 riders, including a contingent from both Speedfix and Flanders.

The Cat 3's started with a Win and Out, with Speedfix's John McGuire taking a commanding win, followed by Nathan Brennaman 2nd, and Jordan 3rd.

Next were the Chariot Races, where Jordan was able to win both his heat and the final.

The last race of the night was a 50 lap scratch race. Speedfix's Rich Bergstrom took a flyer right away, and Jordan rode aggressively in pursuit. Jordan's aggression resulted in getting away solo, and lapping the field. He didn't stop there. He continued his aggression, and got away again, this time wit Speedfix's Matthew Montesano, and Flanders teammate, Merrill Lutsky. Jordan towed them around to lap the field again. That gave him his 2nd race win of the night, and 1st in the nights omnium. What a performance!

Tour De Grove

Jordan and I did the Tour De Grove in St. Louis, MO this past weekend. The Tour de Grove, on Sat, is a big money NRC crit on a 1.7mi technical circuit, and is run as a criterium. The Dutchtown Classic is another NRC crit on Sunday.

We opted out of the Midtown Rally Crit, held Friday night. Unfortunately, our friend, Adam Bergman, crashed hard in that race, and broke his collarbone. What a bummer.

Despite the rainy, cold, and windy conditions, Jordan rode very well on Saturday in the Cat 2/3's. He stayed up front the entire race, and went for it late in the race, only to be caught with 2 corners to go. Still a great effort!

Sunday was a bust. Still cold and rainy, Jordan was feeling sick, but still warmed up like normal. He decided last minute to not start, which was a good choice. I started, and lasted 15min, until I got caught behind 2 different big crashes, and called it a day.

The highlight of the trip was seeing the St. Louis Arch. Definitely a must see!

The first TNT in Medina was held last night under scary skies. It was muggy hot before the start, which turned into rain during the race.

Our starting arrangement was Me, Casper, then Jordan, every 30 seconds. Casper caught me for 30 seconds much quicker than I'd like. Jordan took a bit longer than I expected, stating afterwards he didn't have a great ride, with his rear brake rubbing a bit. Couldn't have felt too bad, he still took a minute out of me, averaged 27mph, and set a new PR by 15 seconds.

Jordan's win at the Campus Crit was a milestone, his 200th career victory. Today was win #201 at Dar's Time Trial. He scorched the 16mi rolling course. Even with a strong East wind, he won by almost a minute, averaging over 27mph. Well done Jordan.

For those of you who didn't know him, Dar Volrath was a great sportman and leader of the Wisport organization. He passed away in 2004, but his ledgend lives on through Dar's Time Trial. I remember back in 2002, when Dar and his family watched Jordan for me, while I raced. What a great family friendly event it was.

In fact, the Willard Time trial, now called Dar's Time Trial, was Jordan's first official race in 2002. He was the youngest racer at age 6. Maren also raced, age 8. I remember being so proud of them both, and Dar was right there encouraging them too.

The Ride and Glide TT kicked off the time-trial season tonight. All the usual suspects were there, minus Toftoy. Casper had the ride of the night on his fixie. Jordan started 30 seconds behind me, and came screaming past about 5 miles in. He smoked me for more than a minute.

Jordan headed down to Iowa City, IA for the Chris Lillig Memorial Cup in Iowa City, IA this past weekend. I couldn't go, so Adam Bergman offered to take him with. Thanks Adam! In the Pro/1/2 field, he finished 21st in the Road Race, 8th in the Time Trial, and 7th in the Old Capital Crit. Way to go Jordan!

Saturday morning was the 52 mile ICCC Road Race. It was windy and warm, causing a lot of riders to drop out. Jordan finished in a small group, taking 21st.

Saturday afternoon was the 10 mile ICCC Time Trial on road bikes. He finished a strong 8th, just over 1 minute behind winner Brian Jensen.

Sunday was the famous Old Capitol Crit. The course features a challenging climb, and fast descent. Jordan was vigilant all race, even getting into a break with Steve Tilford. In the end, Brian Jensen and Adam Bergman got away with Adam taking the win. Jordan finished a strong 7th place, after watching Steve Tilford crash hard on the last lap. Way to go Jordan!

We went hunting for bike race glory, instead of Easter Eggs this weekend. Jordan found his, winning the Cat 1/2/3 Campus Criterium at the University of Minnesota. It was a Flanders versus Grandstay battle, with Jordan out-sprinting Grandstay's Brandon Krawczyk.

Saturday was the Ken Woods Road Race, where Jordan made the winning break. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to spin his 52x14 junior gearing the 43mph needed to stay with the break in the tailwind section. He regrouped with the chase, and finished a respectable 11th. He also survived a near crash when Gregg Brandt went down in a violent echelon twitch.

He was hungry for redemption Sunday at the Campus Crit. Being Easter, turnout was a bit light, with Synergy and GP noticeably absent. About 30 riders towed the line, with Grandstay and Flanders each having 4 riders. Grandstay's Dan Casper was definitely most aggressive rider of the day, getting away in solo and duo moves numerous times. Each time, Flanders, with help from a few others, chased Casper down.

Casper still found the strength to keep the field stretched out in the final laps, with teammate Ian Stanford taking over in the last couple laps. Jordan maintained excellent position near the front, and led the field into the final U-turn before the finish.

Hot on Jordan's wheel were Krawczyk, followed by Flanders teammate Mike Woell. Krawczyk clipped a pedal in the u-turn, and had to dig to get back to Jordan's wheel. Jordan surged through the curve to the finish line just enough to hold off Brandon, with Woell finishing 3rd. Both Carla and I were there to witness the amazing finish. We were definitely beaming with pride!

Prior to the start of this road season, Jordan had expressed his desire to upgrade to Cat 2, and I was against it. I didn't think he was ready. I'm definitely eating crow. I very proud of you Jordan!

Waking up to 2-3 inches of wet snow on the ground, strong winds, and 30deg temps was sure to be a death blow to turnout at the 2011 season opener Durand Road Race. The only thing that would keep Jordan and I from racing was the race being cancelled, so we made the annual trek. I was impressed with how many showed up! Even better, the roads were completely dry.

Jordan lined up with the Cat 1/2/3's with MBRC/Flanders teammates Adam Gorski, Mike Woell, Nick Kimpton, and Mark Skarpohl. Their field was plenty strong, with a full complement of IS Corp, GrandStay, Synergy, and GP riders. Jordan and his team rode a great race, but IS Corp took complete control of the race, putting all 5 of their riders in the winning break. Timmer was the only one to survive their onslaught, taking 4th place. Jordan drew out a group of 6 chasers on the penultimate lap, but the break was long gone. He rode valiantly, and finished 10th. Well earned!

I raced Masters 40+, whose field was most affected by the weather. So much, they combined us with the 50+. There were maybe 15 starters, and the racing was pretty civilized for the first 2 of 4 laps. We still managed to drop about half the group, including arguably the strongest rider in the race, Mike Johnson, who had a mechanical.

I attacked a few times during the 3rd lap, but every time, Birchwood strongman Mike Stensrud brought me back. After the climbs, we were down to 7 riders. I attacked again, and brought Mark Mlinar, Kent McDaniel, and Greg Tischler with. This left Stensrud chasing with Frank Lowry, and my new teammate Dave Herbert in tow. We had a gap, but it wasn't growing.

In the tailwind leg, as they drew down on us, I gunned it again, taking only Mlinar with me. We worked well together over the rollers, and slowly grew our gap. We kept working all the way to the corner before the finish. Mark being a good sprinter, I needed to get my timing right to beat him. I jumped at about 200m and held on for the win. Mlinar was gracious after the finish, as always. Well done Mark!

A few moments later, teammate Dave Herbert was able to out sprint Frank Lowry to win the 50+. Congrats Dave!

I definitely owe my race win to teammates Bill Morice and Dave Herbert, who did a great job of keeping me out of the wind. Thanks guys!

Hillsboro Roubaix - Jordan's Last Cat 3 Race

We heard Hillsboro Roubaix was an awesome event, and it did not dissapoint. 65 degrees and sunny, moderate wind, on narrow, rolling, and winding country roads. Rough roads, but no gravel. The finish circuit has brick pavers, ala Snake Alley style, hence the name Roubaix. On top of a great course, the organization of the race was impressive. Corner marshals everywhere, awesome trophies & payouts. A true community event!

Jordan finished 2nd out of over 100 starters in the Cat 3 race. Teammate Nick Kimpton was instrumental in Jordan's success, with a massive pull into the finishing circuit to setup Jordan. 25-30 riders made it to the final circuit, with 14 sprinting it out for the win. Jordan had the victory in his sights, but was just beaten to the line by 29 year old Mark French. Awesome, considering Jordan's junior gear restriction.

Jordan has now officially upgraded to Cat 2 on the road. Congrats!

Jordan leads the Cat 3 field in the Tumacacori Road Race

It's been a long, cold winter. For the 2nd year running, Scott Flanders and his family hosted us for a week of warm weather training in Sierra Vista, AZ. Tom Pletcher and Steve Gaertner were there too.

Jordan decided to test his legs in a tough road race south of Tuscon, called the Tumacacori Road Race. The course is a 6 mile circuit, with 500ft. of climbing per lap. It featured 3 steep 20% ramps in a row, that wore on the riders over the course of 10 laps.

Jordan raced the cat 3 field with 21 starters, and rode patiently. I watched from the feed zone at the top of the last climb. He was always near the front, and started attacking past the halfway point of the race. 6 laps in, it was a 4 man race, with Jordan making the selection. However, the temperature had climbed to 80deg, and Jordan faltered in the unfamiliar heat. He struggled through the last 2 laps of the race, and finished a courageous 10th. Very proud of you Jordan.

The rest of our trip, we rode with Scotter and Pletcher. The 3 of them put me into the hurt locker for most of the trip. I was pretty beat down by the end of the trip. We climbed Mount Lemmon twice, which ascends 6000ft from the desert floor over 25 miles. Jordan completed the climb in under 2 hours. It took me quite a bit longer. At the top there is a Cookie Cabin in Summerhaven, which serves cookies the size of a pizza, as a reward for making to the top.

8 days, 29.5 hours, 490 miles, 31,000 feet of climbing. A big thanks to Scott Flanders and his family for the hospitality!

Jordan finishes a courageous 6th at CX Nationals

Bad luck prevented Jordan from making the podium at CX Nationals. He flatted his front tire just after the pit on the first lap, dropping out of the top 20 before he could ride back around to the pit to switch bikes. From there, he mounted a courageous chase all the way into a photo finish sprint for 5th place. Clif Bar Devo teammate, Curtis White, edge Jordan for 5th by just an inch.

Jordan took the result like a champion. He knew it was just another race, and didn't let it take away from all his other successes this season. I am so proud of him.

Race announcer, Dave Towle, was so impressed with Jordan's ride, he even mentioned it at the podium ceremony. Thanks to everyone for all their support this year, including his Clif Bar Devo Team, Ridley USA, and Lazer Sport. They made his success this season possible.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!

Cyclocross Nationals starts off with non-championship age graded races to afford riders the opportunity to dial in the course and equipment. They do a podium ceremony, but no medals or jersey is awarded. They are called the B races, which some racers call the "Killer B's" as a sarcastic reference to their less serious nature.

When we got to the course, it was an absolute hockey rink of glare ice. They delayed the racing 60 minutes, and amazingly, by the time Jordan's race started, the ice was gone, and it turned to greasy mud.

Jordan's race included racers aged 10-29. Jordan did the race strictly to get a good look at the course at speed, and was not in it for a result. Turnout was lighter than past years. I assume this was due to riders having to deal with the seeding Time-trials, and difficulty in getting to Bend early enough to race on Wednesday.

Jordan's stiffest competition came from an 18 year old from New Mexico. Jordan led the race to get the best look at racing lines, and did so without burning any matches. He was all smiles from start to finish, and was very excited to unexpectedly win the race.

The Midwest dominated the Killer B races. Sarah Huang of Kenosha, WI won the Women Open, CJ Faulkner and Christopher Fisher from the Twin Cities went 1-2 in the 30-39 race. Chris Smith and Jared Roy went 8-9 in the 40-49. Nice work everyone!

Jordan posted wins in both days of the final USGP in Portland. Jordan raced Cat 2/3's at the other USGP's, but the categories in Portland were such that the only race he was qualified to enter was the Juniors 15-16. Most of the kids in his race will be going on to Bend this week for US Cyclocross Nationals, so it was still a good test for Jordan.

Rain all week long made for a muddy first day. The Juniors raced with the beginner and master women, but started behind them. It took the entire first lap for Jordan to work his way through all the women. Once he got a clear track, his gap to the chasing juniors opened quickly. By the end of the race, Jordan was more than 2 minutes clear of 2nd place. Way to go Jordan!

Day 2 was a much dryer affair. Once again, the juniors had to work their way through the women, and the faster course leveled the playing field a bit. Oregon native Trevor Schuaer was able to keep pace with Jordan for most of the first lap. Eventually, Jordan was able to get away, and then focused on practicing switching bikes in the pits. He won day 2 by around a minute or so. Nice work Jordan!

Monday, we are driving to Bend, OR for the US Cyclocross Nationals. Jordan races on Friday. Good luck buddy!

Jordan goes 3 for 3 at Jingle Cross Rock

Jordan completed his sweep of the Cat 2 races at the 3 day Jingle Cross Rock on Sunday. However, it was not easy. Jordan got the hole shot, only to slide out in a muddy turn, and slip back to 4th. He regained the lead late in the first lap, only to miss a turn, crashing through the course tape, and getting tangled. He slipped all the way to last in the Cat 2's.

From then on, he rode like man possessed. By the end of the 2nd lap, he had caught the lead group of 2, Weston Luzadder, and Dave Staab, who were 2nd and 3rd on Saturday. He kept charging, and by the end of the 3rd lap, he had a 15 second gap, and drove all the way to the finish for his 3rd win in a row. Dave Staab won the sprint for 2nd, to reverse the other 2 podium positions from Saturday. Great rides by everyone.

Jordan rode a virtually flawless race today to take the win in the Cat 2's at Jingle Cross. Today's course was a tough one, with a long steep runup Mount Krumpit, and a challenging fast downhill. Jordan had a good start, and took the race lead about half way through lap 1. He led a strong group of 4 riders, including Chris Wallace, Weston Luzadder, and Dave Staab.

Chris Wallace went to Cyclocross worlds for the past 2 seasons. Luzadder is a former junior national criterium champion. Dave Staab has been tearing up the Cat 1/2 scene in Madison, WI including a 3rd place finish last week in the WI State CX Championships, where Jordan finished 11th.

By the end of the 2nd lap, Jordan was alone with a 10 second gap, and it grew from there. He finished 45 seconds clear for a well earned victory. Congrats on a great race Jordan!

Cyclocross under the lights is a unique experience. The cold, windy, weather added to the experience at Jingle Cross Rock 1. Thick peanut butter mud over the top of rock hard frozen ground made traction unpredictable.

Jordan had a front row start, and went for the hole shot, but Hollywood beat him to it. Jordan quickly took over the lead, only to roll his front tubular tire, and go down towards the end of the 1st lap. He quickly remounted and rode to the pit for his spare bike, and just held onto the lead.

He built up a good gap on 2nd place, only to fall on the off-camber downhill, sliding under the fencing, and dropping his chain. This gave the chasing group of 3 or 4, including Hollywood, a chance to catch up.

Jordan re-found his rhythm, and opened up the gap again, winning by several seconds. He showed real tenacity out there, and was rewarded with the victory. Congrats Jordan!

MN State Cyclocross Epic

The term "Epic" was over used, but what other word describes racing in 6 inches of wet slushy snow?

This was to be my last race of the season, in the Clydesdale division (> 200lbs). We started about 1 minute after the elite women, and caught the tail end of their field right away. Donimator took off like a rocket, earning the whole shot while the rest of us were getting in each others way. I picked my way around people to make it up to Donimator's wheel. Bill Kuster joined us briefly, but he was on his 2nd race of the day, and dropped off the pace shortly thereafter.

We caught the leader of the women's field, Jeanne Fleck, early in the 2nd of 4 laps. I was simply following Donimator's line, who was much faster than me through the turns and technical stuff. I thought about trying to pass him on the straights, but there just wasn't much room, so I just did my best to follow his pace.

Half way into the last lap, I made my move around Don. My gears were frozen, so I couldn't really just drop the hammer. By the time we reached the top of the stairs, he had bridged back up to me, only to endo on the downhill, sealing my victory. Thanks for the great battle Don!

Jordan raced the Cat 1/2's. His starting position was OK, but he chose to ride instead of run the first part, then he fell. By the time he got rolling, he was way back in 20th spot or so with little to no room to move up. He stayed tough, and slowly worked his way up. 12th or so after the 1st lap, 6th after the 2nd lap, eventually moving up to his final position of 4th. Way to be tenacious Jordan!

Jordan had a frustrating race this weekend at Red Barn. He had a bad start, and was forced to chase on a course where drafting was a big advantage. He finished 5th overall, 3rd in the Cat 1/2's. 24 hours later, he is chipper, and has learned from the experience. I'm proud of you Jordan!

Jordan had two great rides this past weekend, winning the Cat 2/3 races both days at the USGP Derby City Cup in Louisville, KY. Each race had close to 150 starters in the warm and dusty conditions. His main competition came from the 2 riders who split wins at the USGP Planet Bike Cup Cat 2/3's this year, Mark Parmelee from Michigan, and Andrew Coe from Kansas.

Jordan had much better luck than at the USGP Planet Bike Cup Cat 2/3 races a few weeks ago, where he finished 4th both days. His Ridley Xnight performed perfectly, and he did not need to pit during either of the races in Louisville.

The course was very cool, with a BMX style whoop, a flyover, 2 sandpits, steep bumps, fast pavement section, and some technical sections in the woods with run-ups. The course was too short on Saturday, resulting in a lot of lapped traffic. They lengthened it Sunday, which was much better.

In Saturday's race, Jordan had a 3rd row start, but was able to work his way to the front very quickly, and never looked back. Parmelee was chasing hard the entire race, with the gap fluctuating between 5-15 secs. Coe was in third, with a similar gap to Parmelee. The race for 4th was more than a minute back from the 3 leaders.

In Sunday's race, Jordan had 4th row start, but two kind-hearted riders in front of him offered up their spots, moving him up to 2nd row. Very nice gesture! Jordan hit the front at about the same point as Saturday, and again, it was Parmelee chasing hard less than 10 seconds back, for the entire race. Coe had some bad luck and crashed twice and had to switch bikes. By the time he moved into 3rd place, the 2 leaders were out of reach.

Dave Anderson of Anderson Custom Bicycles did an amazing job repairing the broken chainstays on Jordan's Ridley Xnight. The drive side was cracked all the way through, and the non-drive side was cracked on one side. Not only is the frame good as new structurally, the paint job is even more impressive. He duplicated the "X" graphic and painted it such it looks factory new, and you can't see any sign of repair. He did this all in 1 week for a few hundred dollars. If you've got a broken carbon bike, give Dave a call. He can definitely fix it!

Jordan has a very successful debut for his new team, the Clif Bar Development Cross Team. He finished 4th in both of the Cat 2/3 races at the Planet Bike Cup this past weekend. There were close to 100 starters both days in each of his races.

He scored the hole shot on Saturday, and was leading the race for the first lap. Unfortunately, he slipped out in a corner, and the rider following couldn't avoid him. Jordan ended up with a broken wheel and frame. However, he shook it off, and rode his broken machine to the pit, and grabbed his other bike. He lost a good 20 spots, but didn't lose his composure. He steadily worked his way back up to finish a strong 4th. Well done Jordan.

Better luck on Sunday, but still not perfect. Let's face it, perfect races in cross are very rare. Jordan's right shifter slipped down a couple laps in, forcing him to pit and switch bikes. He still rode a strong race, staying in the battle for 2nd place until the last lap, where he lost a little ground, and finished 4th.

Jordan was frustrated both days with the problems he had, but knows it's part of cyclocross. Tenacity is key in races like that, and I was proud of him for not giving up.

Jordan joins Clif Bar Development Cross Team

Jordan will be racing Cyclocross this fall for the Clif Bar Development Cross Team. The team is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, managed by Ben Turner. This is a huge step for Jordan in the sport of Cyclocross!

Up until last week, Jordan was planning on racing again for Planet Bike. Todd Schmidt of Ridley USA took notice of Jordan's performance at Tuesday Night Cross, and saw great potential. Todd made several calls, and quickly connected Jordan with Ben Turner. A huge THANKS to Todd for making it happen!

I'd also like to share our gratitude for Planet Bike and Bob Downs. They have been incredibly supportive and generous the past 2 seasons, and were very willing to allow Jordan to switch teams this close to the start of the season.

Jordan Invited to the Olympic Training Center

Jordan has received an invitation to attend the USA Cycling National Junior Talent ID Camp, which will be held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, October 7-11. This camp serves as Talent Identification for the US National Team Programs.

Jordan attended the same camp in 2009. Congratulations on making the selection Jordan!

Farm Dog Time Trial

We all missed Black Dog this year, no question. A huge thanks to Silver Cycling for putting on the Farm Dog TT. It is out there in the boondocks, but well worth the drive.

Carla, Jordan, and I made all 3 of the events, and all 3 of us set personal bests at the last one. Carla took home 3rd for the series in Women's stock, Jordan won the Junior series, and I won the Masters 35+.

Jordan uncorked a huge ride at the finale, catching his 30 second front man, Jens Brabbit, and holding off his 30 second follower, John Shishilla. Both of these guys are all kinds of fast, showing the kind of ride Jordan had. His average speed was 27.5mph, and his time was less than 20 seconds off the likes of Shishilla, Timmer, and Toftoy. Keep it up Jordan!

WI State TT History and Distances

This was our 3rd year going to Kansasville, WI for the WI State TT. Here is a breakdown of our year to year results:

It's clear who's getting faster, and who's getting slower.

The times are always impressive compared to other courses. Part of this is due to the fact the courses are not a full 20K or 40K.

Based on my Garmin:

Measured 20K (12.4mi) distance = 12.04mi = 19.42K
Measured 40K (24.8mi) distance = 24.26mi = 39.13K

Translating Jordan and my times:

Jordan's Time translated to a full 20K:
26:08 @ 27.6mph = 26:55
Jimmer's Time translated to a full 40K:
56:04 @ 26mph = 57:21

Data from the MN State TT Course:
Measured 20K distance = 12.46mi.
Measured 40K distance = 26.9mi.

My Little Girl is a Senior in High School!

Maren and boyfriend Charlie, Prom 2010.

No question that my daughter, Maren, doesn't get enough press from me. I can't make up for lost time, but I want to share her accomplishments and aspirations for which I am most proud.

Personality:
Maren is very genuine. Her outgoing persona and charisma have led her to make many long lasting friendships. She is a very thoughtful and caring person.

Talent:
Maren is a very talented singer and actress. She is a member of the exclusive Hudson High School Chamber Choir, and has already acted in 3 different plays, "Beauty and the Beast", "Willy Wonka", and "You Can't Take it With You". She is set to audition for 2 upcoming local plays, "Hello Dolly" and "Snow White".

Education:
To say Maren is smart is an understatement. She is modest about her good grades, and excellent study habits. Her tenacity led her to retaking the ACT after she was unhappy with her initial score. Her score improved enough to give her a great chance at getting into the college of her choice. I'm proud to say my alma matter, the University of MN, is her first choice. She is planning on a double major in Biology and Psychology. I am so impressed with her drive and direction!

Work Ethic:
Maren is a whiz at retail clothing sales. Her fashion sense, and outgoing personality make her a delight to work with. She currently works at an upscale fashion store in Woodbury called Elodie. Pay her a visit sometime. You won't be disappointed.

I'm so proud of you Maren! Keep up the hard work.

Just Riding Along...

I've been posting all of my updates to facebook lately, and neglecting my blog.

So, what's been going on?

- Joined 14 of my Flanders teammates on a 185 mile ride from Mtka to Duluth. 185 miles in 9 hours. My longest ride ever! Thanks Shepard!
- Skibby and I rode 104 mi on the hottest day in July. 1st half was in the muggy heat, 2nd half was in the pouring rain.
- I've been officiating regularly at the track.
- Jordan has been racing at the track. He has already upgraded to Cat 3.
- I returned to track racing. It's harder then I remember, but still a ton of fun.
- Lots o' TT's. Synergy, MN & WI State, TNT, Farm Dog, Track Pursuits, ...
- Jordan went to the USA Development Camp in LaCrosse, WI. He loved it.
- Carla is feverishly preparing for the Minneapolis Duathalon and Iron Girl. The chick is gettin fit!
- Maren is preparing for her Senior Year in High School, as well as selecting a college! OMG, where has the time gone?

Three State Championships in One Day

20K in 26:08, 27.6mph!

Jordan captured 3 WI State Championships on Saturday, August 7th:
WI State Time Trial - Juniors 10-18
WI State Track Scratch Race - Junior 15-18
WI State Track Points Race - Junior 15-18

He dominated the 20K at the WI State TT with a PR time of 26:08, winning by almost 2 minutes. That's an average speed of 27.6mph.

WI State Track was our first opportunity to race at the velodrome in Kenosha, WI. The turnout was dismal. Only 5 starters in the juniors scratch race, and only 2 starters in the juniors points race.

A huge thanks to the Huang family for their hospitality in Kenosha!

Both Jordan and I participated in the Cat 1/2/3 WI State Track Keirin and Points Race. That was a decent race with 14 starters. Jordan lapped the field with 2 others, finishing 3rd. I held my own, and finished 4th.

Way to go Jordan!
